NEW PUPPIES--VACCINATION SCHEDULE
New puppies have a vaccination record and schedule for further shots on the puppy raising project book. The raiser should make arrangements for getting the puppy vaccinated on the exact dates listed. If this is not possible, (perhaps the date is a Sunday, and the vet is closed), please make an appointment to get the puppy vaccinated one day early. Remember to carry your pup in and out of the vet's office, as well as during the checkup to minimize the chance of it contacting an infectious disease before it is fully vaccinated.

Update--March 2005: Due to an increasing incidence of Leptospirosis in some areas of the United States, GDB puppy vaccine protocol now includes the Leptospirosis vaccine at 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age in high-risk areas.  If your local veterinarian recommends the Leptospirosis vaccination for your puppy, then it can be included in your puppy's 12-week and 16-week boosters. Despite the increasing incidence of Leptospirosis in a few areas, we want to emphasize that this is an UNCOMMON disease.  Because it is uncommon it is not necessary to take older puppies in to start the vaccine series.  The vaccine protocol change only affects NEW puppies that have not yet had their 12-week and 16-week vaccinations.

NOTE: Guide Dogs does NOT want their puppies to recieve Corona vaccine. Many vets mix this shot in with the other routine boosters, so make sure to mention that your puppy must not recieve serum for Corona!

RETURNING DOGS--BOOSTERS
The general guideline is that if a dog is LESS THAN 30 days from returning to campus for recall when his vaccinations are due, please wait and GDB will update them upon arrival. Make sure to note this on the project record and let the puppy truck know when checking the dog in.

If the dog is MORE than 30 days from returning when the vaccines are due, update them at the local vet. Please keep in mind that you may have to get a pre-authorization for the cost if you are close to the limit for this dog (most of this age are!) Also, the fact that the vaccinationss were updated should be noted on the project record and noted, too, at check in.
