Answers to Questions about Socializing a pup at School
From Puppy Raising Advisor, Barb Deevers

Q: What grade in school is appropriate for most youth raisers to consider socializing their pups at school?  How old should a pup be before attending school?
A: Each situation should be considered by the leaders and advisor on an individual basis. The recommended age for a dog is five months, but also at the discretion of the leader and advisor.

Q: What permissions should a raiser seek before taking a pup to school?
A: Their leader, Puppy Raising Advisor, school principal and all teachers.

Q: In the past, our raisers have come up with some creative ways to introduce their dogs at school. One did a presentation at the first all-school assembly, another did a short introduction at each of his classes. What is the best way to educate teachers and kids about Guide Dogs and the raiser’s purpose in socializing the pup at school?
A: Both examples sound good. It is a good idea to have some formal format to introduce the school to the program.

Q: Should students attempt to have their pup accompany them to classes all day, or just for part of a day, or for selected special events? How many days a week should youth expect their pups to accompany them?
A: Each situation should be considered individually. It’s good to plan on short days or special events as a place to start. Things that need to be considered include: are there classes or events that the raiser will not be able to handle the dog (such as gym class); does the raiser have access to relieving the dog when needed, etc. There are no set number of days per week–just appropriate scheduling of  events and the raiser’s ability to handle the puppy.

Q: What warning signs should youth watch for to know they need to get their pup out of the school situation?
A: Other kids not respecting the project, the puppy becoming solicitous, or interfering with school work or classes.

Q: What should a raiser do if permission is denied?

A: Respect the school’s wishes and find other ways to work on socialization.
