Guide Dogs for the Blind selects the best puppies that are raised for their breeder program. It is a great honor for a dog to be chosen, because it must meet the most exacting standards for health, pedigree and temperament. Breeder dogs are housed in homes near the San Rafael Guide Dog facility, and brought in to the kennels only for breeding or whelping. Females are retired at seven years of age or after having produced five litters. Puppy raisers are given the privilege of naming the first littler of the breeder they raised, and raising a puppy from that litter if they so choose.
