An important part of any Guide Puppy's training
is getting used to going out
in public. Aside from new sights and sounds, restaurants pose the added challenge of the smells and temptation of food. The pups need to learn that they must never pick up a morsel off the floor, or try to take food from a table. They must tuck under the table or lie quietly by our side without getting up while we enjoy our food. We are extremely grateful to all the restaurants in the community who allow us to bring our puppies into their establishments so we may teach these important concepts and prepare our dogs for their future careers as Guides to blind people. We especial thank the manager of our local Diary Queen, who invited our puppies in as a group for this enjoyable social outing! |
The younger puppy class of four-month-olds finds a quiet corner of the shopping complex in which to practice their good manners before entering the restaurant. |

Carmen checks on Bayla. Bayla says "I'm being good, Mom!" |
Kelsey and Sheila enjoy some cool treats while Bayla relaxes. |
Elton waits patiently for his raisers to finish. |

The older dogs set an example for the babies. At left, Akron relaxes at Lizz's feet. Right: Emmett gets comfortable while Andrea looks on. At 10-months-old, going to restaurants is old hat for these veteran puppies! |

The public always enjoys meeting the puppies in training. Emmett makes friends while Andrea explains to a fellow customer about the Guide Dog program, and why he's sharing the Dairy Queen with a half dozen puppies in training on this particular night! |
